Cary Palmer, PE, who is Engineering Manager for

Raytheon speaks to the club about the

United States Antarctic Program.

Cary, using a slide presentation to enhance his talk,

explained to the club that the continent of Antarctica

is "the highest, driest, coldest, windiest and emptiest" continent.

He pointed out that temperatures fall below -125 degrees F and

winds of over 200 mph have been recorded.

Cary said that there are over 2000 U.S. scientists and support personnel each year in Antarctica performing more than 200 science projects.  He also pointed out that for two of the three U.S. stations, McMurdo and the South Pole stations, personnel are flown in by USAF cargo transport.  The third, Palmer Station, is reached by enjoying a "five day cruise" from the southern tip of Chile to Palmer.Cary joked that the Palmer station is sometimes referred to as the"Banana Belt" since summer temperatures can reach the fifty degree (above zero) mark.  Cary closed by suggesting that, because of the conditions andlocation, this might be a job for younger men and women.
